Acyclovir is used to treat all of the infections caused by different types of herpes viruses. Acyclovir is known as a selective antiviral. There are more than 20 different types of herpes virus, but Acyclovir affects only the HSV-1, HSV-2 and herpes zoster viruses.

Enzymes released by these viruses convert Acyclovir into an active form that is toxic for the virus, but not for healthy body cells. Acyclovir blocks any more herpes virus from being produced.

As a result, Acyclovir decreases the pain and itching from herpes infections. It won’t cure the infection, but it does speed the healing process.
