It’s important to start treatment as soon as possible after you notice the first signs of a herpes infection. For genital or oral herpes, the first sign is often a cluster of red bumps, blisters or rashes that tingle or burn. Sometimes the tingling and burning begin before you notice any bumps or blisters.
If taking the pill or liquid form of Acyclovir, be sure to drink a full glass of water afterwards.
For people using the cream or ointment form, massage a small amount into the infected area very gently. You may want to wear gloves to avoid spreading the virus to other parts of your body or to other people. Always wash your hands thoroughly after applying the cream (or touching the sore). Keep using the cream until the area has crusted or shows clear signs of healing.
Missed Doses
If it’s only been an hour or two, take the dose as soon as you remember; but if it’s been any longer than that, then it’s probably best to skip the missed dose and get back on track with the next one. Never take a double dose.
What If Take Too Much Acyclovir?
Overdose with the oral or cream forms of Acyclovir is rare. But if you’re having any unusual or severe symptoms, stop taking Acyclovir until you have a chance to talk with your doctor.
Acyclovir Storage
Store Acyclovir at room temperature in the tightly closed container it came in. Keep away from children, as well as heat, light and moisture.
